Loft Find from 17 years ago - Sonic 500
« on: August 26, 2020, 07:51:20 PM »
Found this bad-boy lurking in the loft from two house-moves ago, the Motors and Rotors invoice is dated May 2003.
I suppose it is about time I put it together!
What are the thoughts on making it leccy? Looks like there is room for a 3s or similar lipo in there...

Is there a rule of thumb of watts per kilo or similar for something that's meant to be a pylon racer?

Hi,
Yes there are guidelines to assist you in choosing a suitable power train, I googled " Watts per Pound for RC planes and came up with a few sites I.e.
https://www.rc-airplane-world.com/watts-per-pound.html

Iíd use George at 4max for suggestions. Post piccies of the kit and a piccy of the specs on the box. Also how you intend to fly it ( fast , sporty etc)

Personally Iíd use a https://www.4-max.co.uk/po-3541-1270.html. With a10 x 5 on 3s or 8x8 on 4s (faster) .

Thanks for the links chaps, interesting reading!
I've sent off the specs to 4-max as suggested and will see what is suggested, probably exactly what Mr Forrest has already sussed!
Cheers,
Keith

You were pretty close to George's recommendation Ian.
He suggests PO-3541-1270 but he recommends 8x6 prop on 4s 2200mAh, 40C LiPo. He reckons 8x8 will overload both the motor and battery.
I'll have to invest in some 4s, all I have are 3s.

Hmmm, I wonder how the Timber and Visionaire would be on 4s >:D

Cheers,
Keith

Well there you go, I checked the prop on my motor again, and the 8x8 is actually an 8x6 ( I need new glasses!) 🙂

Are you buying the motor/speedo?

Yes, I was just putting a shopping list together with 4-max. They seem to have all the bits in stock including some consumables I will need, snakes and so forth.

Dammn not been here for a while...I still have my i/C Sonic 500 and would have paid good money for a kit!
Its an awesome aeroplane, I have one with a Q500 racing motor...too noisy for anywahere! and a G51 on a Zimmermann pipe that has a 10 x 10 prop and is whisper quiet and super fast!

Successful maiden flight today   :D
No real drama, a bit of trim and she was flying very well. Might add a bit of expo, a wee bit twitchy but I guess it's meant for bank and yank pylon turns!
Landings were a wee bit fast but I'll get the message eventually. Looking forward to getting to know this model better.
